Have you ever heard of a “Duchenne smile?” While conducting a study on facial expressions, it was discovered that there are literally two distinct types of smiles: the real smile (formally known as Duchenne) and the fake smile.
A “real smile” involves a multitude of facial muscles to participate in order to show your pearly whites including the zygomatic major muscle (corners of your mouth) and the orbicularis oculi muscles (the cheeks and muscles around your eyes). Whereas a fake smile only requires the muscles right around your mouth and sometimes not even all of those if you smile with your mouth closed.
